  3. A SALT is what you connect to when you dial 199 on an ARE line. On an AXE
  4. line, 199 connects you to a SULT-D.
  5.  
  6. If you are on an AXE exchange, you will hear a normal ring tone after you
  7. dial 199. If you are on an ARE then you will hear a very LOUD "BRRRRR"
  8. (like a loud dialtone)...Older exchanges...? If you have to dial pulse
  9. 199, forget about being connected to a new exchange! 8^)

  11. Here is a complete list of the tests that SALT can do.  And no, 199 doesn't 
  12. just test your ringer :-)

  21. If SALT is free then a ring tone is heard, otherwise wait for the engaged
  22. tone. Once ring tone is heard you hang up, and wait for 'phone to ring back
  23. (about four seconds)

  25. If it is SALT then you'll get a dial tone
  26. If it is ABR then you'll get a 900hz tone
  27.  
  28. For SALT you can do different tests. firstly you dial the number and wait for
  29. a ring tone, then hang up. Wait for it to ring back, pick it up then you get
  30. a tone:
  31.  - a 900hz tone means ok.
  32.  - an engaged tone means faulty
  33.  - a nu (beeeeeeeeeeeep beeeeeeeeeeep) tone means the line is faulty
  34.  
  35. Dial 1 listen for ring tone, then dial 0 for a dial/inpulse test.
  36.  - if + sec 900hz then ring tone = dial inpulsing & count ok
  37.  - if nu tone then impulses are incorrect (replace 'phone)
  38.  - if engaged tone then count is incorrect (replace 'phone)

  40. Dial 3 for a bell test (full voltage) [ normal ring ]

  42. Dial 4 for a bell test (half voltage) [ shorter and sharper rings ]
  43.  
  44. Dial 5 for an insulation resistance test on side A of line.
  45. Dial 6 for an insulation resistance test of both sides of line to Earth.

  47. Dial 7 for a test between line conductors.

  49. Dial 8 for a line loop resistance test (straight away)
  50.  - if busy tone loop resistance is too high
  51.  - if nu tone loop resistance is too low
